Kabel Noord plans switch to fibre
Dutch cable operator Kabel Noord is planning to switch to fibre. The company has a HFC network offering broadband, TV and fixed telephony customers in the five Friesland towns of Kollumerland, Dantumadiel, Dongeradeel, Ameland en Schiermonnikoog. These municipalities also own the company and will vote on 10 April over the fibre plans.
Kabel Noord has devised a plan to bring fibre to all the covered homes and businesses. If the plan is approved, it will start rolling out fibre, using internal resources, in the densely populated areas. These areas should be covered by the end of 2015.
Once the FTTH connections are ready, customers will not see any changes in price. Packages may change, due to higher bandwidths and new TV possibilities. Geelhoed said Kabel Noord will still offer analogue TV. The fibre network will also be opened up to other service providers.
